Vaccines Available Wednesday to Arizonans 16 and Older in Maricopa County, at State-run Vaccination Sites

All Arizonans 16 years and older can register to be vaccinated starting Wednesday throughout Maricopa County, and at five state-run vaccination sites in Maricopa, Pima, and Yuma counties.

Arizona recently switched to a hybrid approach for vaccine distribution based on age and counties across the state have also recently begun vaccinating frontline essential workers like grocery store employees and transit workers.

Appointments for people 16 years and older will be available starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday, at Arizona’s five state-run vaccination sites: 

• State Farm Stadium in Glendale
• Arizona State University’s Phoenix Municipal Stadium in Tempe
• Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Chandler
• University of Arizona in Tucson
• The newly-created Yuma Civic Center in Yuma

Maricopa County also announced Monday that it would adopt the same prioritization as the state and open vaccine appointments Wednesday to all residents aged 18 and older for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson/Janssen vaccine, and to those 16 and older for the Pfizer vaccine.

The timing of vaccine eligibility at specific locations may vary, according to a county spokesperson. Maricopa County residents can find the closest vaccine to them, the type of vaccine offered at each location and a link to register on Maricopa County’s website or at azhealth.gov/findvaccine.

Expanding Vaccine Rollout

The move comes as vaccine supply to the state had been steadily increasing during the last several weeks. As of Monday morning, 1.8 million Arizonans had received at least one dose of the vaccine.

“We anticipate more and more vaccines reaching Arizona heading into April, making it possible now to expand prioritization,” the state’s public health director Dr. Cara Christ said in a press release Monday.

Outside of the state-run vaccination sites, most individual counties across the state have been vaccinating essential workers and individuals 55 and older through partnerships with large employers and pharmacies. Some counties have been vaccinating people in younger age groups, including 45 and up in Cochise County. 

The vaccine has been available to people 18 and up in Coconino, Gila, Greenlee and Pinal counties.

The state-run sites, which use the Pfizer vaccine, are able to vaccinate those 16 and older in Arizona, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services. Sites using the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson/Janssen vaccines are only approved for individuals 18 and older.

Eligible residents can sign up to receive the vaccination at the state-run vaccination sites https://podvaccine.azdhs.gov. Anyone who does not have access to a computer can call 1-844-542-8201 to make an appointment.
