Former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos left the department’s funding for low-income schools, protections for students with disabilities, and rights for survivors under Title IX in shambles.
For Esperanza Freitchen, replacing Betsy DeVos with an educator at the Department of Education is the cherry on top of a Biden presidency.
Trump has received pushback for choosing business-minded DeVos to run education, while Biden has promised to build a “teacher-oriented” department.
“It’s clear that our nation’s schools must fully reopen and fully operate this school year. Anything short of that robs students, not to mention taxpayers, of their future,” DeVos said during a call with governors.
The president of the Arizona Education Association says DeVos' guidance harms public school students by shifting funds to wealthy private schools.
“She made it extremely difficult for these students to get any relief. These schools take the money and run, and the students end up holding the bag with massive debts."
