ELECTION UPDATE: Former corporation commissioner Kris Mayes will be Arizona’s next attorney general.
Arizona election workers finished counting all of the state`s ballots this week, with Mayes ending up ahead of Republican Abraham Hamadeh by just 510 votes.
But it`s not over yet. State law requires an automatic recount for a race if the margin between two candidates is equal to or less than 0.5% of the number of total votes cast. This means—while unlikely—Hamadeh could make up the difference when ballots are counted a second time.
Mayes campaigned on not prosecuting abortion in Arizona. Abortion is currently legal up to 15 weeks, but a full ban from a near-150-year-old law may soon be put back on the books.
The former Republican defeated election denier Hamdeh, a Trump loyalist who was running for office for the first time.
Mayes said she will not prosecute anyone who gets or performs an abortion in Arizona. She will replace Attorney General Mark Brnovich in 2023. Her victory will flip the office from Republican to Democrat-controlled.

🗳ELECTION UPDATE🗳 Ballot verification continued Thursday, with 77.6% of all votes being counted after Maricopa County submitted its evening update to the Secretary of State’s Office.
With over 570,000 ballots still left to be counted, it is still too early to tell who will be the winner in most races. Republican Kimberly Yee has the most commanding lead in her bid to be reelected as treasurer, with a 213,000 lead over her opponent, Democratic Arizona Sen. Martín Quezada.
US Sen. Mark Kelly and Democratic candidate for Secretary of State Adrian Fontes are ahead of their opponents by roughly 100,000 votes, and Secretary of State Katie Hobbs leads Kari Lake in the race for governor by nearly 20,000 votes.
The rest of the statewide candidates in the lead are ahead by less than 10,000 votes. Swipe through 👉 to see the full breakdown of Arizona’s statewide and federal candidates.

🗳ELECTION UPDATE🗳 As Arizona election officials continue to work around the clock to verify and count ballots for the midterm elections, the dust is beginning to settle around some of the state’s more contentious contests.
Here are some of the highlights:
💸 Voters have approved Prop 130—a proposal to grant the state Legislature the power to consolidate and amend the amounts and qualifications for tax exemptions, notably for veterans with disabilities, widows, and widowers.
🏢 Prop 131, which would create the office of lieutenant governor and amend state requirements regarding rules of succession for statewide offices, is within striking distance of passing. More than 1.15 million Arizonans have voted in favor of the proposal so far, meaning roughly 90% of the remaining ballots would have to be against Prop 131 in order for it to fail.
🟦 Sen. Mark Kelly is projected to win his bid to retain his seat in the US Senate, and Adrian Fontes has bested his opponent to become Arizona’s next secretary of state. The Democratic candidates for Arizona governor, attorney general, and superintendent of public instruction have all managed to expand their slim leads over their Republican opponents—though not enough to be declared winner of their respective races.

🗳ELECTION UPDATE🗳 With only 6% of ballots left to be counted as of Monday morning for Arizona’s midterm elections, more candidates are claiming victory—although for some, celebrations still might be a little premature.
🟦 Governor’s Race: After maintaining her lead over Kari Lake, Secretary of State Katie Hobbs issued a statement of confidence Sunday night, stopping short of claiming victory. In order for Lake to take the lead, she would need nearly 60% of remaining ballots to be in her favor.
🟥 Interim Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell believes she will soon be holding the role on a more permanent basis, after Sunday’s ballot update gave her a 68,000 vote lead over Democratic opponent Julie Gunnigle. Gunnigle conceded the race Monday morning, stating that, “the change we need won’t happen this year, but we aren’t deterred. We vow to keep our eye on this office.”
🤝 Democratic candidates who have lost their races are taking it in stride—namely, state Treasurer candidate Arizona Sen. Martín Quezada and Corporation Commission candidate Lauren Kuby. Both candidates have conceded their races and offered well-wishes to their opponents.

Democrat Lorena Austin won her election to represent State Rep Dist-9 with 30,659 votes.
"Thank you for your support, thank you for your vote, your voice, and thank you for laying the foundation for a better Arizona and creating this historic progress with me. I am proud to call Arizona my home. Adelante, Siempre, Adelante."
In an interview with Copper Courier, Austin said one of the policies she wanted to focus on was housing and the rising cost of the rent.
"I am also interested in cracking down more on private investors from scooping up residential housing and then selling it for… top dollars, or just making it Airbnb rentals or short-term rentals. [Also,] simplifying the zoning for builders, and to discourage some of the local pushback on multi-unit affordable developments."
Congrats, Lorena, on your win!
