Another day, another tariff.
Last week, President Donald Trump announced new 50% tariffs on Canadian imports that will take effect Aug. 19.
It’s hard to say exactly what impact this will have before then. US importers generally pay the tariff (not Canada), and they can pass the added cost onto consumers.
Common imports from Canada include wood, aluminum, rubber, cotton, carpet, and alcoholic beverages.
We asked what you thought of these new tariffs, and here’s what you said:
💬 “Trump is incapable of admitting he’s wrong, so he’s going to plow ahead no matter how it impacts the rest of us. Tariffs are another financial burden that do nothing to help the American people. In this current economy—due to the war in Iran, the big, beautiful bill, and the wage gap compared to the general cost of living—going without is becoming a very sad part of life.” — Sue G.
💬 “We were forced to go to Canada Rx in British Columbia for two of our prescriptions due to the high cost of those drugs in the U.S. Since Trump slapped the first tariffs on Canada, they of course passed them onto the bottom line that we pay for [these] drugs. This new tariff will add an increase of approximately 1/3 of the cost of our Rx.” — Prescott resident
💬 “The tariffs directed at Canada have had a real effect on the hospitality industry in Scottsdale. We used to see around 10 percent of our patrons as Canadian. Now, I can’t remember the last Canadian we have received in our restaurant. I would bet that every ‘Snowbird’ destination is feeling the same thing. … We had no closer ally than Canada. Tariffs are destroying that alliance. We are just beginning to suffer for that.” — Bob

💬 “I understand we are having problems with our domestic beef supply. This could have been partially ameliorated by imports from Argentina and Brazil. However, Trump’s tariffs made everything even worse. As Usual, Trump pretends to understand tariffs and believes no one will notice his lies.” — Les R.
💬 “Idiotic comes to mind, if it gets passed on to US importers in the end. Why bother? And this complete alienation of neighbors and allies is even worse!” — Linnea H.
💬 “In my Not So Humble Opinion … Everything [Trump] does harms the people in the country. What else would you expect from a Criminal. We are in dangerous times, and it’s hard to decide if I should be actively protesting, posting, talking to people, preparing for the absolute worst. Or, do my quiet protests and stands like voting, staying informed, boycotting- until the midterm elections, and ride it out till 2028. I’m 70 and still working to stay in an apartment, rather than fulltime in an RV. It’s a tough road some days. We have so much potential in this country to do good, to make the world, we all live in, a better place. Yet, Trump seems to give, A Lot of people, permission to be their absolutely worst selves.” — Susan C.
