Welcome back to Rent Check PHX. In today’s issue, we’re talking about another neighborhood group that’s building community for both homeowners and renters. 

I’ve always loved the Coronado neighborhood, which is just north of me in Garfield. And now that I’ve spoken to the president of its neighborhood association and learned more about the events they hold there, I love it even more. 

I recommend stopping in to visit The Coronado PHX, Dark Hall Coffee, Coronado Park, and the Oak Street Alley murals—then you can see for yourself what the area is all about. 

We’ll also talk about a federal affordable housing bill, upcoming community events, and some notable rental listings.

Lots of neighborhoods have monthly meetings and cool events like block parties. But not every neighborhood inspires residents to proudly wear its name on a T-shirt. 

The Coronado Neighborhood Association, founded in 1985, has worked to cultivate the kind of community pride that makes residents—homeowners and renters alike—want to rep their neck of the woods. 

The volunteer-run organization has worked for decades to appeal to all residents, whether or not they own homes. The neighborhood falls in a ZIP code where 62% of housing units are renter-occupied, nearly double the rate in the larger Phoenix metro area.

The Coronado Neighborhood Association is involved in many events and projects focused on bringing people together, including its annual home tour and the WayneFest music festival. 

When it comes to the qualities that attract people to Coronado—and make them become diehard fans—the association’s President Kirsten Keane noted the neighborhood’s diversity, history, and passion.

🪟 If you like an airy loft space: This 1,881-square-foot home has a loft with what looks like lots of natural light that could be used as a sitting room, office, or storage space. The three-bed, two-bath is near 15th and Glendale avenues. It has a garage, walk-in closet, and patio area with turf. The home is listed for $2,950 a month, and it’s available now. Pets are allowed. 

🙈 If you want to be able to disappear in your house: I thought the previous house was big, but this one sits at 2,677 square feet. It’s located off Cave Creek Road and Deer Valley Drive, and it’s listed for $3,310 a month. The four-bed, three-bath has a sizable fenced-in backyard and a primary bathroom with a separate tub and shower, and a double vanity. It’s available now, and pets are allowed. 

🎨 If 900 square feet is all you need: This two-bed, one-bath near 14th Street and McDowell Road is in the aforementioned Coronado neighborhood. What it lacks in space, it makes up for in character with its blue kitchen cabinets, dark walls and exterior, and backyard mural. The house, built in 1937, is available now for $2,150 a month and has a fenced-in backyard with turf. Pets are allowed on a case-by-case basis.
