Police have placed criminal charges against YouTube personality Jake Paul, after receiving hundreds of tips placing him in the crowds with hundreds of others who gathered in Scottsdale as part of a popular nationwide uprising to demand police be held accountable for violence against Black Americans.
Paul, who’s 23 years old and has over 20 million YouTube subscribers, now faces two misdemeanor crimes for criminal trespass and unlawful assembly for the events that took place at the upscale shopping center over the weekend.
On June 3, Scottsdale Police announced they had made a total of 20 arrests so far, and had been able to recover $46,000 in property.
In video footage, Paul appeared to be both outside and inside the Fashion Square mall after police had ordered crowds to leave after declaring unlawful assemblies.
People were quick to identify the YouTuber in social media posts. The day after the footage surfaced online, Paul issued the following statement saying, in part, that he and his group had been peacefully protesting that day and were simply documenting — not engaging.
The social media star has yet to react to this most recent development. His last Instagram post is that of a black square — part of the online campaign to honor the Black Lives Matter movement.
