Arizona Goodwill staff member shares tips for saving money this Halloween

Halloween spending is expected to be scary good for retailers this year as experts predict a record high of $12.2 billion. That’s a pretty decent jump from last year’s record of $10.6 billion.

With shoppers ready to drop the most dollars on costumes, candy, and decor, the struggle to stay on budget AND come up with a frighteningly unique costume is real.

It’s times like these when secondhand and thrift stores truly shine. Your neighborhood Goodwill store not only carries a wide array of items to bring your unique Halloween ideas to life without breaking your budget, but they also use those purchases to provide much-needed services in the community.

There can be a method to the Halloween madness, so we have included some tips to help you navigate the aisles below.

Start early

You likely notice when the grocery and drug stores begin displaying Halloween items while the summer is still in full swing. Thrift stores are no different. There is a big influx of hauntingly good costumes, clothing, and decor this time of year so shop early and often.  However, that doesn’t mean you have to wait until fall.  Keep your eyes open throughout the year for fun and unique statement pieces to beat the October rush.

Double down on discounts

The only thing better than saving money is saving even more money. Do some research to see if your area thrift stores offer additional coupons or daily specials. For example, Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona offers 50% off select color tags each day, $2 tags every Thursday, as well as 25% off for military, students, teachers, and first responders on Sundays (with valid ID).

*Note, discounts don’t usually apply to seasonal merchandise, but you can shop the whole store and find things like candle holders, trays, or various things to display fall décor, or clothing and accessories for costumes. On Oct. 30 and 31 all Halloween seasonal merchandise will be 50% off.

Keep an open mind

One of the best parts about thrifting is that each store has unique items. Consider it a vibrant and fun reflection of the surrounding community. Products go in and out daily, so if you have a particular costume or decor idea in mind but can’t find it, don’t get discouraged. Consider visiting multiple stores and make a day of fun—or browse the aisles to see what sparks your imagination. Get creative and you just might find the exact items you didn’t know you needed.

Think beyond Halloween

As mentioned above, purchases made at stores like Goodwill support a network of outreach programs that benefit your neighbors and fellow community members throughout the year. Consider donating back your costumes or decor. Shopping secondhand is also a great way to think green and help care for the environment. By giving clothes and other items a new life, it keeps millions of pounds out of area landfills every year.
