From December 1 to 7, adoption fees at Maricopa County Animal Care & Control will be waived as part of the nationwide “Empty the Shelters” event.
As the holiday season approaches, a nationwide initiative is offering hope for hundreds of shelter pets in Maricopa County. The BISSELL Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters” event is set to make pet adoption more accessible by significantly reducing adoption fees from December 1-17, potentially giving over 600 local dogs a chance at finding their forever homes.
National adoption campaign aims to address shelter crisis
In response to the ongoing challenges faced by animal shelters across the country, BISSELL Pet Foundation has launched its largest funded adoption event of the year. This campaign will encompass more than 400 shelters across 45 states, with Maricopa County Animal Care & Control (MCACC) serving as a key participant.
During the event, MCACC will waive adoption fees for dogs aged six months and older. This initiative comes at a crucial time, as highlighted by BISSELL Pet Foundation founder Cathy Bissell: “It has been an incredibly challenging year for saving lives, as our nation’s shelters continue to take in more pets than they are adopting out. Tens of thousands of shelter pets—of all breeds, ages, and personalities—are desperately in need of homes.”
Local impact and success stories
MCACC’s partnership with BISSELL Pet Foundation has already shown promising results. “Our ‘Empty the Shelters’ events have been very successful, and we hope to end the year by truly emptying the shelters,” said Kim Powell, Communications Supervisor for MCACC. The shelter has facilitated over 3,100 adoptions through previous “Empty the Shelters” events.
Program’s proven track record
Since its inception in 2016, the Empty the Shelters program has helped more than 300,000 pets find loving homes. The initiative has expanded to partner with 800 animal welfare organizations across 48 states and Canada, making it the country’s largest funded adoption event.
Potential adopters are encouraged to research their prospective pets and review adoption requirements before participating. For more information about the program or to begin the adoption process, interested individuals can visit www.bissellpetfoundation.org/empty-the-shelters or Maricopa.gov/Pets.
