The Arizona Travel ID requirement takes effect May 7, 2025. Find out how to get your hands on one.
Air travelers and visitors to federal buildings will soon face new identification requirements as Arizona prepares for a major change in acceptable forms of ID. According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, starting May 7, 2025, residents will need an Arizona Travel ID or other federally compliant identification to board domestic flights and enter federal facilities.
The Arizona Travel ID, recognizable by its distinctive gold star in the upper right corner, meets federal Real ID requirements established to enhance security measures nationwide. Current Arizona driver’s licenses and identification cards without the gold star will no longer be accepted for these purposes after the deadline.
How to obtain your Arizona Travel ID
Getting your Arizona Travel ID requires several steps:
- Schedule an appointment at your local Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) office or authorized third-party location
- Gather required documentation proving identity, age, and Arizona residency
- Pay a $25 fee for the new identification card
For a complete list of acceptable documents, visit Arizona Travel ID Requirements.
Birth certificate requirements
Many applicants must present a birth certificate as part of the documentation process. Arizona residents born in-state can obtain their birth certificate through the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) Office of Vital Records. The process requires:
- Submitting an application online or in person
- Providing valid government-issued photo identification
- Paying the required fee
- For applicants under 18, proving marriage or legal independence
Visit ADHS Vital Records for detailed information on obtaining birth certificates.
Those born outside Arizona must contact their birth state’s vital records office for certificate requests.
The Arizona Department of Transportation recommends getting your Arizona Travel ID at least two weeks before your trip to allow for shipping time.
