Earlier this month, I wrote that I was interested in learning more about stand-up paddle boarding, and I’m happy to report that I did something about it.

I took an intro to stand-up paddleboarding class with the city of Tempe, and it was a really great time.

For $30, two instructors led me and nine other women through the basics of paddleboarding at the Tempe Town Lake Marina.

We learned how to get onto the board from a dock, move between kneeling and standing, and paddle forwards and backwards—and no, I didn’t fall in.

We learned some important things about safety as well, like how to maneuver out of a tight space and avoid hitting other paddlers.

Even though I wasn’t a total beginner, I learned some tips that will make my next paddling session more enjoyable. Knowing where exactly to put my hands on the paddle makes a big difference when it comes to speed!

If you’re interested in taking the same class, the next one is at 6:45 a.m. on Aug. 9.

The city has tons of other recreation classes as well. The fall brochure will be available online starting Aug. 7. Registration opens for Tempe residents on Aug. 11, and for everyone else, Aug. 18.
