February 20, 2026

President Donald Trump is getting ready to deliver the first State of the Union address of his second term.

The nationally televised primetime speech will set the tone for the 2026 midterms, when every member of the U.S. House of Representatives is up for reelection and key Senate seats are up for grabs across the map. If Democrats retake both chambers, it would become more difficult for the GOP president to pass his policy agenda.

The address also comes as the nation prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary this summer.

Trump may highlight his immigration crackdown, sweeping tariffs and ambitious foreign policy moves. The president may also talk about the SAVE Act, a House-passed, Republican-backed voting bill that mirrors Arizona‘s unique proof of citizenship requirements that could drastically change voter registration nationwide.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, said “the best is yet to come” when he formally invited Trump to deliver his address.

Trump will deliver his State of the Union address on Feb. 24, 2026.

Is this Trump’s first State of the Union?

This is the first State of the Union speech of Trump’s second term.

Trump gave an address to Congress shortly after he was sworn in last year, but presidents do not deliver an official State of the Union until the second year of their term.

Trump also delivered annual State of the Union addresses during his first term.

Who is going to the State of the Union?

The State of the Union is a joint address to Congress. Members of the House and Senate typically attend. Many bring special guests from their districts.

Arizona’s newest member of Congress, however, does not plan to attend.

Rep. Adelita Grijalva, D-Arizona, said she will give her passes to Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minnesota, so she can bring the family of Renee Good, the Minneapolis woman shot and killed by a federal immigration agent in January.

Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Arizona, also plans to skip the event.

Ansari’s office announced Feb. 18 that she and her guest, Sonia Almaraz, will go to MeidasTouch and MoveOn’s “People’s State of the Union,” which the office described as “a rally counterprogramming Trump’s speech.” Almaraz is the partner of Arbella “Yari” Rodríguez Márquez, who was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and is in custody at the Eloy Detention Center. The Arizona Republic highlighted the couple’s situation in December 2025.
