On March 13, US Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-Ariz.) was denied entry to the Florence Correctional Center following the death of Emmanuel Damas, a Haitian asylum seeker who died after being denied adequate medical care while in ICE custody after reporting a toothache to facility staff.
On March 20, Ansari returned to conduct an oversight visit, where she heard from detainees that the conditions at the Florence Correctional Center were “fatal” to Damas.
Ansari also visited to Eloy Detention Center, and met with her constituent Arbella “Yari” Rodriguez-Marquez, who has leukemia that went ignored and untreated for months. While Yari is receiving more medical care, her health isn’t improving after months of medical neglect in ICE detention.
