Record-setting amounts of food were distributed to hundreds of families by the St. Mary’s Food Bank in Tuba City, breaking a record they set in April.
Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez shared images in a tweet, thanking everyone for their donations, hard work and commitment to helping the Navajo people.
Nez announced 582 families in the Navajo Nation had received food, bottled water and other essential supplies.
On May 20, St.. Mary’s announced in a Facebook post that they were returning to Tuba City today what they hoped would be the “largest mobile pantry distribution in food bank history.”
St. Mary’s achieved their goal, delivering a record-setting 125,000 pounds of food they transported in five trailer trucks in their largest single-day distribution ever, according to the Arizona Republic.
The Navajo Nation now has more confirmed cases of COVID-19 per capita than any other city in the entire United States.
On the day St. Mary’s announced the new giant food distribution, Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez shared a tweet revealing there had been 100 new cases of COVID-19 reported that day, two more deaths and 1,026 recoveries.
As of May 25, the total number of positive COVID-19 cases reported in the Navajo Nation was at 4,689, with the total number of deaths reaching 156.
