Jex Haskell is 18-years-old and voting for the first time. He recently graduated from high school, and as he gets prepared to go to college, he is also voting for the first time with a strong sense of responsibility.
To him, voting is important for his generation and his Native American community. “I think young people realize they need to choose someone who will represent them,” said Haskell.
As a Native American, he is concerned about Biden’s support of fracking but believes his community can have the opportunity to work with him if elected president. “We have the chance to talk about the exploitation of Native American natural resources,” said Jex, hoping to have a president willing to work together to find solutions.
To Jex, the last four years felt as the country regressed in many issues. He protested along with fellow classmates who are part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, and has seen the light shine on issues such as systematic racism and police brutality.
Reflecting on these issues, he admits being nervous voting for the first time, recognizing this a controversial and impactful election for his community.
