Zingara Market

Scottsdale’s Zingara is a coffee shop, wine bar, and bespoke market, but coffee is the specialty here. Zingara features a La Marzocco espresso machine that’s made in Italy. The silver apparatus rests on a white counter in a space framed by blue walls with bookshelves built into them. Find a variety of espresso-based drinks here—your standard cappuccino, latte, and mochas alongside creative offerings like the chai latte or the Pistacchietto, a double espresso topped with bronte pistachio cream and whipped cream. Guests can also order tea, hot cocoa, or a cold brew.
Carefree Coffee Roastery
7171 E. Cave Creek Road, Carefree
Maggie and Lars, co-owners of Carefree Coffee Roastery, micro-roast specialty coffee beans sourced from more than 30 countries in-house to ensure “a smooth full flavor without the bitterness or burnt taste,” according to the roastery’s website. The site also claims that their roasting process, which controls the temperature and time in the roaster, eliminates the acidity in the beans.
Carefree also sells a large variety of roasted coffee beans and loose-leaf tea on its website. In the shop, enjoy espresso-based drinks along with baked goods like quiches and tarts.
Pair Cupworks
31 S. Robson, #103, Mesa

Housed in Cider Corp in downtown Mesa, Pair Cupworks is owned by the husband-and-wife team of Eugenia Tai and Kimhak Em. Kimhak is an award-winning barista and roaster who focuses on the coffee side of things while Eugenia takes care of the tea selections, graphic design, and branding. On Tuesdays, you can even watch cupping ceremonies take place. The team recently opened a second location in Tempe.
New Penny Café
735 N. 114th Ave., Avondale
New Penny Café is owned by three women—Deni Banach, Brittany Salazar, and Laura Hansen. The team serves up a plethora of espresso-based drinks, morning cocktails, flights of Champagne, and coffee. Food-wise, look forward to smoothie bowls and breakfast sandwiches in those early morning hours and salads and sandwiches in the afternoon.
808 Social
8435 W. Peoria Ave., Peoria
A tagline on 808 Social’s Instagram page reads “a sip of Hawaii in Arizona.” Matthew and Charis Browne own this shop, and as you might have guessed, Charis is from Hawaii while Matthew lived there for 15 years (OK, maybe you didn’t guess those specifics). The owners wanted to bring their love of all things Hawaii to Arizona. While their Hawaiian coffee focus may bring thoughts of summer beaches, they cater to the seasons in the contiguous states, as well. The fall menu posted on Instagram includes options like the Pumpkin Crunch latte and the Autumn Chill chai.
Chestnut
2398 E. Camelback Road, #101, Phoenix
Valley residents will recognize the name Chestnut and know that this is one of the area’s signature coffee shops. The Arcadia location at The Vintage has closed and is slated to reopen in just a few weeks in a new location in the Biltmore Center Business Park, right across the street from the Biltmore Fashion Park in the former location of Over Easy, where owner Kirsten Steele will continue to lovingly craft a menu of great food and coffee options.
Fair Trade Cafe
1020 N. 1st Ave., Phoenix
Downtown Phoenix’s Fair Trade Cafe is owned and founded by Stephanie Vasquez. As the name suggests, the spot serves organic, fair-trade coffee. In addition to the coffee menu, find baked goods, artisan sandwiches and smoothies. Some house-specialty coffee drinks include the cafe helado, which includes ice cream blended with cold brew coffee.
Hanai Coffee + Cocktails
3648 W. Southern Ave., #150, Phoenix
Laveen’s Hanai Coffee has a special mission of employing foster kids who are about to age out of the system. Co-owned by Ryan and Sara Senters, Hanai serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a light-filled, contemporary space. Hanai also has a kid’s menu and serves cocktails in addition to coffee.
The Nile Coffee Shop
105 W. Main St., #7309, Mesa
Co-owned by Michelle Donovan, the setting of downtown Mesa’s The Nile Coffee Shop is pretty incredible. The 100% vegan shop is housed inside the historic Nile Theater. Find items like the McBlufin, a vegan take on the classic McMuffin. Fall drinks on the menu include the Campfire latte, pumpkin pie chai, and pumpkin spice latte, naturally. Guests can also take part in free yoga every Saturday at 9 a.m.
Deseo Coffee Shack
2330 E. McDowell Road, Phoenix
Martha Valenzuela owns Deseo Coffee Shack, where you’ll find organic, fair-trade coffee on the menu. That includes Mexican-inspired drinks like the mazapan latte, which features freshly grated mazapan floating atop and mixed in with the bold notes of a medium-roast espresso.
Modern Grind
13044 W. Rancho Sante Fe Blvd., Avondale
Avondale’s Modern Grind was founded by Daphnie Kelly, who was raised on a farm in Washington state, where she dreamed of opening a coffee shop that served high-quality beverages made with locally sourced ingredients. You can purchase coffee beans, espresso-based drinks, a doggy delight treat that consists of Milk Bones with whipped cream, baked goods. The shop also makes a variety of sweetened energy drinks like the Makin Me Blush, made with strawberry, coconut, Watermelon Reign, and coconut milk.
Spencer’s Place
15341 W. Waddell Road, #B101, Surprise
Former special needs teacher Karin York founded Spencer’s Place in Surprise, where she employs individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Spencer’s is named after York’s son, who has Down syndrome. Find creative drinks like a salted caramel latte, spiced chai, or lavender white mocha. A second location is currently in the works.
