The US Senate on Wednesday shut down a potential vote on a bill that would protect abortion rights nationwide.

The law, known as Title 42, has been used to turn away more than 1.8 million migrants since it was invoked in March 2020.

“I had a home in Michoacán, a good life,” Rosario said. “My husband and I got married and we built a beautiful life together, but we had to leave. We dropped everything in order to just feel secure again.”

President Joe Biden signed into law the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act on March 16 as part of the omnibus spending bill. 

Since the Trump administration invoked Title 42 in March 2020, more than 1.7 million migrants have been turned away at the border – more than 300,000 of them in Arizona.

Republican lawmakers thrust Arizona into the national culture wars last week when they passed strict measures targeting abortion and the rights of transgender young people.

The failed proposals would have added layers of bureaucracy to the election process, such as requiring returned ballots to be sorted by precinct and limiting what pens could be used at polling places.
