Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) showed up at a Phoenix immigration court on May 21, where a chaotic scene unfolded as ICE officers detained immigrants who showed up for their court hearings.
Copper Courier’s political reporter, Sahara Sajjadi, was on the scene and documented the day’s events.
Some Arizona state lawmakers, including Arizona State Rep. Analise Ortiz, were also on hand to provide support and guidance to immigrants about their rights.
The detentions appear to be part of a coordinated nationwide scheme where ICE prosecutors moved to dismiss removal proceedings against immigrants only for ICE officers to arrest them moments later after judges granted the dismissals.
