An obscure Arizona law requires county recorders to maintain live video recordings of tabulation centers while ballots are being counted.
President Donald Trump has encouraged folks to act as “poll watchers” this election, an easy task for Arizonans, who can livestream ballot tabulation centers from all 15 counties.
Trump has repeatedly put out a call to his supporters to monitor polling places and has made several made unfounded claims of election fraud. But monitoring the election on the ground isn’t as simple as showing up. There’s often an approval process to do that, meaning Trump’s request could lead to situations more akin to voter intimidation than election monitoring.
In Arizona, there is a lengthy process to become a certified observer. But while watching the polls in-person takes many steps, anyone is available to watch the elections process from the comfort of their own home.
According to state law, elections officials are required to, “provide for a live video recording of the custody of all ballots while the ballots are present in a tabulation room in the counting center.” As a result, elections officials from all across Arizona have set up livestreams of their tabulation centers, where anyone can watch as ballots are received, verified, and counted.
