Many popular girls’ names from 30 years ago fell out of fashion, but the most popular boys’ names remained in the top 100.
Two familiar names kept their spots at the top for most popular names for newborns in Arizona in 2023.
Liam stayed the most popular name for newborn boys for the 11th year in a row, and Olivia kept the No. 1 spot for newborn girls for the fifth year in a row in the state, according to data from the Arizona Department of Health Services.
Mateo, Noah, Oliver, and Santiago were the other top names for newborn boys in Arizona in 2023.
Isabella, Emma, Mia, and Camila were the other most popular names for girls.
Liam and Mateo were the only names that made up more than 1% of total newborn names last year. Liam came in at 1.12% and Mateo came in at 1.11% of all newborn boy names.
Olivia just missed the cut for girls, coming in at 0.99% of all newborn girl names, and Noah was also just under the mark at 0.96% of all newborn boys.

The top three names for newborn girls in 1993 were Jessica, Ashley, and Samantha. Samantha is the only one that remained in the top 100, and it was the 96th most popular name.
The top three names for newborn boys in 1993 were Michael, Christopher, and Daniel. Daniel and Michael stayed in the top 25, while Christopher fell to 57th.
Other things to note:
- Ninety-two boys were named Weston, while 90 boys were named Easton.
- Charlotte (No. 8) and Evelyn (No. 9) are the only girls’ names in the top 10 that don’t end in the letter “a.”
