This weekend I attended the Willo Historic Neighborhood Home Tour and Street Fair for the first time, and it was an experience to remember.
The neighborhood is known for overflowing with preserved historic architecture. I frequently pass through the area and always wondered what an up-close look at the homes’ interiors would be like, and I finally got my chance.
The neighborhood is in midtown Phoenix, between First and Seventh avenues on the east and west, and McDowell Road on the south, and Thomas Road on the north.
Each year, homeowners open their doors to ticket holders who follow a map through the neighborhood to tour selected properties. Some homes are on the market, while others participate simply to showcase their architecture and preserved history.
The homes I toured were built in the 1920s, and while most had some modern upgrades, many original elements remained, including tiles and flooring, brick walls, and fireplaces.
