The Phoenix area has twice as many miles of canals as Venice and Amsterdam—combined. Some of the canal network sits on the land of the Gila River Indian Community, which is getting funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to install solar panels on their canals.
A group of more than 100 climate advocacy groups, including the Center for Biological Diversity and Greenpeace, have sent a letter to Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, urging her to accelerate the widespread deployment of solar panels on canals and aqueducts owned by the Interior Department.
In addition to solar panels along canals on Gila River Indian Community land, research is also being done by SRP and ASU to bring solar panels to canals all over Arizona.
