Star party & bat fest: 2 stellar events coming to Kartchner Caverns in October

Kartchner Caverns State Park, a hidden gem in southern Arizona, is gearing up for an exciting October filled with family-friendly events that showcase its natural wonders. From stargazing to bat appreciation, visitors will have unique opportunities to explore the park’s diverse attractions.

Starry nights at an International Dark Sky Park

On Oct. 5, 2024, Kartchner Caverns will host a Star Party from 1-9 p.m., inviting visitors to experience the park’s renowned dark skies.

As an International Dark Sky Park, Kartchner Caverns offers unparalleled views of celestial bodies. Volunteers from the Huachuca Astronomy Club will set up telescopes and share their expertise, allowing guests to observe planets, stars, nebulae, and other cosmic marvels. A guest speaker will present from 5-6 p.m., adding depth to the celestial experience.

For those who miss this event, another Star Party is scheduled for November 2, 2024.

Celebrating bats: Kartchner’s winged residents

The park will transform into a haven for bat enthusiasts on Saturday, Oct. 19, with its annual Bat Fest. Running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., this event honors the park’s colony of over 1,000 female cave myotis bats that call the Big Room home from April to October. Visitors can look forward to:

• Expert presentations on bat-friendly gardening, bat hearing, and White-Nose Syndrome
• Opportunities to meet live bat ambassadors
• Arts and crafts activities for children
• Educational displays about Arizona’s 28 bat species
