Buckeye Public Library has gotten rid of fees, but patrons are still on the hook for lost or damaged items.
Another Valley library has moved to a fine-free system.
The Buckeye Public Library waived all existing late fees on Oct. 19 and instituted a fine-free policy moving forward.
Library officials said in a press release that the library got rid of fines as a way to provide a fresh start for patrons, and to continue a commitment to inclusivity.
“By removing financial barriers, the library aims to encourage everyone, regardless of financial situations, to utilize its extensive collection and services,” the library stated in the release.
Though the library got rid of all future and existing late fees, library patrons are still on the hook for existing fees for lost or damaged items. Items are considered lost 28 days after their return date.
The Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe public libraries have also eliminated most fines over the past few years.
The Buckeye Public Library has two locations, one at 21699 W. Yuma Road, and another at 310 N. Sixth St.
