Planned Parenthood said Arizonans have been asking for more male-focused contraception options since the US Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson decision in 2022.

Planned Parenthood Arizona started offering vasectomy services at its Central Phoenix Health Center this month in an effort to promote male-focused birth control.

The last time that Planned Parenthood offered vasectomies—a surgical procedure that blocks sperm from leaving the body—in Phoenix was a decade ago.

Planned Parenthood Arizona began offering the service in Tucson at its Southern Arizona Regional Health Center in 2023 and expanded it to Phoenix after the organization said there was an overwhelming request for appointments.

Nearly half the people scheduling appointments in Tucson were traveling from the Phoenix metro area, according to Planned Parenthood.

“We … are thrilled to expand this safe and effective family planning method to our metropolitan Phoenix community,” Dr. Jill Gibson, chief medical officer at Planned Parenthood Arizona, said in a press release.

Planned Parenthood said Arizonans have been asking for more male-focused contraception options since the US Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson decision in 2022, which eliminated the federal right to access abortion and made the state of abortion access in Arizona unclear.

On April 9, the Arizona Supreme Court reinstated a 1864 territorial law that makes abortion almost entirely illegal.
