This is part of a series from The Copper Courier highlighting the Arizona legislators involved in the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection or the events leading up to it. Read the rest here.
Sen. Sonny Borrelli served in the US Marines from 1977 to 1999 before moving to Arizona. He was a member of the Lake Havasu City Council for two years and then was elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 2013. He was elected to the State Senate to represent Lake Havasu’s District 5 in 2016 and reelected in 2020. Borrelli is the majority whip in the Arizona State Senate.
Contributions to the Insurrection
Borrelli was a major proponent of the “Stop the Steal” movement, which claims former President Donald Trump won the election despite no proof of widespread fraud.
He attended an unofficial November daylong hearing at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Phoenix where Trump lawyers Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis continuously made unsubstantiated claims of widespread fraud.
Borrelli was among the list of Arizona Republicans that signed on to a letter to Congress asking lawmakers to accept 11 “alternate” electoral votes for Trump or to have all of the state’s electoral votes “nullified completely until a full forensic audit can be conducted.”
Following the insurrection, Borrelli and other legislators faced calls to ban them from the House and Senate.
He is up for re-election in 2022.
Borrelli isn’t alone. See the others who played a role in the insurrection.
