If you drive in Phoenix, you may have noticed the new photo radar cameras that went up earlier this year.
The city placed nine cameras along streets and rotated eight others in school zones.
At first, there was a month-long warning period during which drivers were notified of their speeding but not ticketed. Enforcement began March 25.
How many citations and legal notices do you think have been sent out over the past two months as a result of these cameras? Take a guess, and see the answer in the USA Today story below.

This is the LOOKOUT Lowdown, where once a month we’re highlighting stories from LOOKOUT, a nonprofit newsroom that serves Arizona’s LGBTQ community.
Here are some of their latest stories:
1️⃣ Phoenix Pride has filed for bankruptcy, but it is continuing operations for now. This comes just months after Tucson Pride shut down and canceled its 2026 festival.
2️⃣ Local author Caroline Tracey wrote a nature book about salt lakes, but it also lays out her queer coming-of-age story.
3️⃣ An Arizona company called Queer Scout provides nightlife tours and events for adults. Scouting America, aka The Boy Scouts, is suing them for trademark infringement, saying consumers could think the two groups are related.

Here’s one event to consider this week:
How Do We Save Our Public Schools? A Community Town Hall
When: Saturday, June 6, 3-5 p.m.
Where: Murphy-Wilmot Library, 530 N. Wilmot Road, Tucson
Description: “We’ll discuss the challenges facing our public schools, including school funding, ESA vouchers, issues related to declining enrollment, and what these challenges mean for our students, families, and communities. This will be a chance to hear from local leaders, ask questions, and learn how we can work together to protect and strengthen Arizona’s public schools.”

Share yours: What’s something you’ve done so far this year to better your community? Let me know, and I may share some responses!
Here’s one from reader Connie G.:
💬 “I took storytelling classes at The Storytelling Institute. It empowered me to tell stories (both fact-based and personal stories) about an underserved population, people with developmental disabilities. I have told these stories at private and public events. I highly recommend it! Classes are offered both online and in person. Day and evening hours! If you’re over 65 years old tuition, at Maricopa County Community Colleges, is half price!! There is also a program that offers a scholarship, Community Storytelling Fellows, which is held during the Spring semester.”

Join COURIER and 3.14 Action on June 11 for Facts vs. Fiction: The Fight for Science in American Democracy.
Misinformation isn’t just noise. It’s shaping policy decisions that determine who can afford care, which communities are protected, and how our government responds to real-world risks.
This live conversation will examine what’s at stake when facts are ignored and how science-informed leadership has shaped policy on healthcare, climate, agriculture, and public health. At a moment when institutions and public trust are under attack, we’ll explore what happens when decision-making is driven by evidence, what it takes to rebuild trust, and why scientific integrity is essential to democracy.
Stay tuned for more speaker announcements, and don’t miss this conversation.
